CSAO delivers a wide range of health and safety training developed by and for the construction industry. Training options include:

Certification
On construction projects with 50 or more workers and lasting more than three months, the Joint Health and Safety Committee must have a minimum of four members. Of those, at least one worker member and one management member must be "certified" by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). You must complete three programs to become certified:
Construction Health and Safety Rep
Sector-Specific Certification
Simulated Hazard Analysis

Classroom Training
CSAO offers classroom training in a variety of subjects. For a list and description of the training courses we offer, visit the Training Courses section or search online for upcoming dates and locations by visiting our Search Training section. In addition, our Catalogue describes the programs we offer and the Training Schedule lists the dates, times, locations and costs. Classroom training consists of programs and courses. Programs are generally longer in duration (4 hours or more) and cover topics in greater detail. They can be used as prerequisites or credits for other CSAO programs. For most programs, CSAO records and tracks participants and issues a Record of Training card upon completion.

Locations
Classroom training is offered at CSAO's head office in Etobicoke (Download Map), local offices of construction companies and associations, union halls and union training centres, community colleges, jobsites, or through CSAO's mobile classroom.

Training Requests
In addition to the structured programs, CSAO can deliver informal training on virtually any health and safety topic. These courses are less than four hours long and provide basic or introductory information that can be customized to suit different trades, sectors, employers, and sites. Participants are not recorded and ROT cards are not issued. For more information, contact your local CSAO Consultant or the Training and Advisory Group at 1-800-781-2726.

Industry-delivered Programs
CSAO has developed training programs which a competent person can deliver without having taken an Instructor Workshop. The program package typically contains a Trainer's Guide and a User's Guide. Together, these guides provide the material and information needed to deliver the program. CSAO has developed three industry-delivered training programs:
Basics of Fall Protection (M054KIT)
Propane in Construction Review (M056KIT)
Elevating Work Platforms (M058KIT)

Other topics are being developed in this format.

Instructor Workshops

CSAO trains instructors from construction and other sectors to deliver CSAO programs. Instructors are shown how to deliver the programs using all required support materials such as instructor's guides, lesson plans, overheads, participant workbooks, and, in some cases, tools and equipment. Delivery must adhere to uniform standards of content, presentation, and testing.

A prerequisite for all Instructor Workshops is that you must have completed CSAO's version of the course you wish to teach within the past year.

Instructor Workshops
For more details on a specific course, visit the Training Courses section.
Objectives
After successfully completing the Instructor Workshop, participants will
be familiar with delivery methods for the program they intend to deliver
obtain one set of participant and instructor guides, audiovisual aids, and other training material
(except for the hardware and equipment kits used in some programs)
know how to order material, keep records, and otherwise administer the program.

Trade Training
With assistance from Labour-Management Health and Safety Committees, certain trade groups have developed training specifically tailored to their trade. These multilevel programs are generally taken one level each year. Participants receive proof of training after each level, and upon successful completion of the entire program CSAO issues a card and certificate. The first two levels are:
Construction Health and Safety - Basic
Construction Health and Safety - Intermediate

Workshops
Workshops provide a forum for contractors to learn from each other, share experience, and gain practical information on accident prevention. The region in which the workshop takes place determines the content - the emphasis is on information of particular interest to the group involved. Small- and mid-sized contractors find these workshops particularly helpful. Topics include:
responsibilities of workplace parties
roles of CSAO, the Ministry of Labour, and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board
injury statistics by region, trade, or sector
guidelines for health and safety programs
resource materials and information networks
how to benefit from CSAO products and services.

Attendance is restricted to a maximum of two representatives from each firm. You must register no later than two weeks before each workshop. Each workshop runs for about three hours in the evening. For more information, visit our Training Courses section.
